ಸ್ಪಿರಿಚುಯಾಲಿಟಿ ಮತ್ತು ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ

ಸ್ಪಿರಿಚುಯಾಲಿಟಿ ಎಂದು ನೀವು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿರುವ ಜ್ಞಾನದ ಪ್ರಾಕಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಎಲ್ಲ ಜ್ಞಾನಗಳೂ ಅಂಗವೇ.. ಅದನ್ನು ವಿಜ್ಞಾನದ ತಟ್ಟೆಯಲ್ಲಿಡಬೇಕಿಲ್ಲ. ಸ್ಪಿರಿಚುಯಾಲಿಟಿ ಇಲ್ಲದ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನವೂ ಅಲ್ಲ. ನನ್ನ ಲೆಕ್ಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಪಿರಿಚುಯಾಲಿಟಿ ಎಂದರೆ ನೀವು ಹೇಳುವ ನಂಬಿಕೆಗಳಲ್ಲ. ನಂಬಿಕೆ ಎನ್ನುವುದು ಬಹು ದೊಡ್ಡ ಮಾತು. ಬಹಳಷ್ಟು ಬಾರಿ ನಮ್ಮ ನಂಬಿಕೆಗಳನ್ನು ನಾವು ಮೀರಲಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಇದನ್ನು ಶಿವರಾಮಕಾರಂತರು "ನಮ್ಮ ಕಲ್ಪನೆಯನ್ನು ಮೀರದ ದೇವರು" ಎಂಬ ಲೇಖನದಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಧಿತಗೊಳಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಚಿದಂಬರ ರಹಸ್ಯದ ನಾಯಕ ಕಡೆಗೆ ರೊಚ್ಚಿಗೆದ್ದು, 'ಅದೂ ಕರೆಕ್ಟೇ ಹೋಗೋ' ಎನ್ನುವುದೂ ಸತ್ಯದ ಹಲವು ಮುಖಗಳನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸುವ ಒಂದು ಪ್ರತಿಮಾ ರೂಪಕವಷ್ಟೇ. ನಮ್ಮ ನಂಬಿಕೆಗಳು ಸರಿ ಎಂದು ನಮಗೆ ಕಂಡಂತೆ ಬೇರೆಯವರಿಗೆ ಹಾಗೆ ಕಾಣಬೇಕಾಗೂ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಬಿಗ್ ಬ್ಯಾಂಗ್ ಥಿಯರಿಯ ಪಿತಾಮಹ ಸ್ಟೀಫನ್ ಹಾಕಿಂಗ್ ತಮ್ಮ ಥಿಯರಿ ತಪ್ಪು ಎಂದು ತಾವೇ ಹೇಳಿದ್ದು ಅಂತಹ ಒಂದು ಉದಾಹರಣೆ. ಅವರನ್ನು ನಮ್ಮ ಕನ್ನಡದ ವೈಜ್ಞಾನಿಕ ಬರಹಗಾರರಲ್ಲೇ ಪ್ರಮುಖರಾದ ನಮ್ಮ ನೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಮ್ಯಾಥ್ಸ್ ಮೇಷ್ಟ್ರು ಜಿ.ಟಿ. ನಾರಾಯಣರಾಯರು ಭೇಟಿಯಾದಾಗ ಅವರು ನಮ್ಮ ಭೇಟಿಯ ಕಾರಣವೇನಿರಬಹುದು ಎಂದರಂತೆ. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಸ್ಟೀಫನ್ ಹಾಕಿಂಗ್ ಕೊಟ್ಟ ಉತ್ತರ "ಕಾಸ್ಮಿಕ್ ಅರ್ರೇಂಜ್ ಮೆಂಟ್" ಎಂದು. ನಮ್ಮವರು ಸುಲಭವಾಗಿ ಅದನ್ನು ಹಣೆಬರಹ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ.

ಆದರೆ ಸ್ಪಿರಿಚುಯಾಲಿಟಿ ಅಷ್ಟು ಸುಲಭದ್ದಲ್ಲ. ನೀವು ಅನುಸರಿಸುವ ನಂಬಿಕೆಗಳ ಪರಿಣಾಮಗಳೇನು ಎಂದು ಯೋಚಿಸಿ ನೋಡಿ. ಮನುಷ್ಯನ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನ ಶಕ್ತಿ ಇನ್ನೂ ಅಳತೆಯ ಪರಿಮಾಣಗಳಿಗೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿಲ್ಲ್. ಅದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನವನ್ನು ದೂರುವುದು ತಪ್ಪು. ಯಾವುದೋ ಶಕ್ತಿ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ನಡೆಸುತ್ತಿದೆ ಎಂಬುದು ನಿಮ್ಮ ನಂಬಿಕೆಯಾದರೆ ಅದು ತಪ್ಪಲ್ಲ. ಅದನ್ನೊಪ್ಪದ ಜನ ವರ್ಗದ ತಿಳಿವಳಿಕೆಯೂ ತಪ್ಪಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ ಅದನ್ನು ಮುಂದೆ ಮಾಡಿ ನೈಜ ವಿಷಯವನ್ನು ಮರೆತು ಜಗಳ ಮಾಡುವುದು ತಪ್ಪು. ಆದರೆ ನಮ್ಮ ನಂಬಿಕೆಗಳು ಇತರರಿಗೆ ತೊಂದರೆ ಮಾಡದಂತಿರಬೇಕೆಂಬ ಅರಿವಿದ್ದರೆ ಸಾಕು.

ವಿಜ್ಞಾನಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಸ್ಪಿರಿಚುಯಾಲಿಟಿಯನ್ನು ಸುಳ್ಳೆಂದು ಸಾಧಿಸುವ ತವಕವಿದ್ದರೆ ಅದು ವಿಜ್ಞಾನವಲ್ಲ. ಅವನು ವಿಜ್ಞಾನಿಯಲ್ಲ್. ವಿಜ್ಞಾನಿ ಜ್ಞಾನಾರ್ಜನೆಗಾಗಿ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ ಕೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಅದನ್ನುತ್ತರಿಸಿದೆ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನಿಯನ್ನು ಅವಹೇಳನ ಮಾಡಿದರೆ ಅದು ಸಾಧುವಲ್ಲ್. ವಿಜ್ಞಾನಿಗಿರುವುದು ಇರಬೇಕಾದ್ದು ಸತ್ಯ ಶೋಧನೆಯ ತವಕ. ಅದನ್ನು ಆಧ್ಯಾತ್ಮಿಕ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನಿ ತನ್ನ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನ ತಕ್ಕಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ತೂಗಿ ನೋಡಿ ನಿರ್ಧರಿಸಿದರೆ, ಭೌತವಿಜ್ಞಾನಿ ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಗಣಿತದ ಪ್ರಮಾಣ ಕೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಗ್ರಹಣದಂತಹ ವಿಚಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ನಾಗೇಶ್ ಹೆಗಡೆ , ಸಂಪದದಲ್ಲೇ ಡಾ.ಎ.ಪಿ.ರಾಧಾಕೃಷ್ಣ, ಪುತ್ತೂರು (ಇಲ್ಲಿದೆ)

ಅವರ ತಿಳುವಳಿಕೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ತಪ್ಪೇನಿಲ್ಲ್. ಆಸು ಹೆಗಡೆಯವರದೂ ಅಂತಹುದೇ ವಿಚಾರಧಾರೆಯ ತೆಳುಹಾಸ್ಯದ ಮಾತು. ಅದಕ್ಕೇ ಮನ ನೊಂದಿತೆಂದರೆ, ಭೂಮಿ ಗುಂಡಾಗಿ ಸೂರ್ಯನ ಸುತ್ತಾ ಸುತ್ತುತ್ತಿದೆ ಎಂದ ಗೆಲಿಲಿಯೋ ಗೆ ಬೆಂಕಿ ಹಚ್ಚಲು ಹೋಗಿದ್ದಕ್ಕೆ ಏನಾಗಬೇಕು?

ಕಡೆಯ ಮಾತು. ೯೨ ರಲ್ಲೋ ೯೩ ರಲ್ಲೋ ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ನೆನಪಿಲ್ಲ್, ಗ್ರಹಣವಾದಾಗ ನಮ್ಮ ಬೀದಿಯ ವಯಸ್ಸಾದವರಿಗೆ "ಮುಂದಿನ ಗ್ರಹಣ ನೋಡಲು ಇರುತ್ತೀರೋ ಇಲ್ಲವೋ ಬಂದು ನೋಡಿ" ಎಂದು ತೋರಿಸಿದ್ದೆ. ಅದಕ್ಕವರು ಬೈದುಕೊಂಡೇ ಬಂದು ನೋಡಿದ್ದರು. ಈಗಲೂ ಅವರಲ್ಲಿಬ್ಬರು ಇದ್ದಾರೆ. ವಯಸ್ಸು ೮೫ ರ ಆಸುಪಾಸು. ನೋಡದೆ ಒಳಗೇ ಉಳಿದ ನನ್ನ ಜೊತೆಗಾರರೇ ಕೆಲವರಿಲ್ಲ!

ಕ್ಷಮಿಸಿ ದಯವಿಟ್ಟು. ಶುದ್ದ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ, ಅನ್ವಯಿಕ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ಮತ್ತು ಇಂಜಿನಿಯರಿಂಗ್ ಗಳಿಗೆ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸವಿದೆ ಎಂದು ನೀವೆಲ್ಲಾ ತಿಳಿದಿದ್ದೀರಿ ಎಂದು ಭಾವಿಸಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಹಾಗಿದ್ದರೆ ಇಂಜಿನಿಯರ್ ಆಗಲು ನಿಮಗೆ ಬಾಯಿಪಾಠ ಹೊಡೆದರೆ ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾಗದು. ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಯ ನಿಯಮಗಳನ್ನರಿಯುವ ಕಲೆ ಶುದ್ದ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ವಾದರೆ ಅದರಿಂದಾಗಬಹುದಾದ ಉಪಯೋಗಗಳನ್ನು ನಿರುಕ್ತಿಸುವುದು ಅನ್ವಯಿಕ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ. ಅನ್ವಯಿಕ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನಕ್ಕೆ ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನದ ಮೂಲಕ ನಿಜಜೀವನಕ್ಕೆ ಉಪಯುಕ್ತ ಸಲಕರಣೆಗಳನ್ನು ನೀಡಬಹುದಾದ ಮೂಲವೇ ಇಂಜಿನಿಯರಿಂಗ್. ವಿಷಯದ ಆಳಕ್ಕಿಳಿಯದೇ ಸುಮ್ಮನೆ ಹೋದರೆ ಇಂತಹ ಮಾತು ಬರಬಹುದೇನೊ. ಬಿಲ್ ಗೇಟ್ಸ್ ಇಂಜಿನಿಯರಿಂಗ್ ಮಾಡಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ ಅವನು ಜಗತ್ತು ಕಂಡ ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟ ಇಂಜಿನಿಯರ್. ಸ್ಟೀವ್ ಜಾಬ್ಸ್ ಸಹ ಅಷ್ಟೇ. ವಿಶ್ವೇಶ್ವರಯ್ಯ ಸುಮ್ಮನೆ ಉರು ಹೊಡೆದಿದ್ದರೆ, ಕನ್ನಂಬಾಡಿ ಇರುತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ.
ತಂದೆ ತಾಯಿಯ ಆಸೆಯಿಂದಾಗಿ ತಮ್ಮ ಬದುಕನ್ನು ಆಯ್ಕೆಯಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಆಯ್ದುಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕಾಗುವ ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ನನಗೆ ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಸಹಾನುಭೂತಿಯಿದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಇಂಜಿನಿಯರಿಂಗ್ ಅಂದರೆ ಉರು ಹೊಡೆಯೋದು ಅನ್ನೋ ಮಾತು ಹುರುಳಿಲ್ಲದ್ದು.
ಇಂಜಿನಿಯರಿಂಗ್ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದ ನಾವುಗಳು ಪರಿಸರ, ಕಾವ್ಯ, ನಾಟಕ ಅಂತೆಲ್ಲಾ ಓಡಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದೆವು. ಆಗಿನ್ನೂ ವಿಟಿಯು ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಟೆಕ್ಸ್ಟ್ ಬುಕ್ ಇರಲೇ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಕೇವಲ ಮೈಸೂರು ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾನಿಲಯದ ನಾಲ್ಕು ಕಾಲೇಜುಗಳಿಗೆ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಬರೆಯುವುದು, ಮುದ್ರಿಸುವುದು ಲಾಭದಾಯಕವಾಗಿರಲೇ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಮೂಲ ಲೇಖಕರ ಹಲವಾರು ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನು ಆಕರಗ್ರಂಥವಾಗಿ ಓದಬೇಕಿತ್ತು. ಇಂತಹ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾವಾಗೆ ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಪರಿಸರ ಬಳಗದ ಗೆಳೆಯರ ಜೊತೆ ಭೇಟಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಾಗ ಅಲ್ಲಿನ ಕಲಾವಿದರೊಂದು ಶಿಲ್ಪ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಅವರು ಬಳಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನಕ್ಕೂ ಇಂಜಿನಿಯರಿಂಗ್ ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನಕ್ಕೂ ಅಂತಹ ವಿಶೇಷ ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸವೇನಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಅದನ್ನು ನೋಡುತ್ತಾ ಅವರೊಡನೆ ಮಾತಿಗಿಳಿದೆ. ನೆನಪಿನಲ್ಲಿರುವಂತೆ ಅದನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದೇನೆ.
ನಾನು: ಸಾರ್ ನೀವು ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಟೆಕ್ನಾಲಜಿ ನಮ್ಮ ಇಂಜಿನಿಯರಿಂಗ್ ಟೆಕ್ನಾಲಜಿ ಯಂತೇ ಇದೆ. ಹಾಗಿದ್ದರೆ ಕಲೆಗೂ ಇಂಜಿನಿಯರಿಂಗಿಗೂ ಏನು ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸವಿರಬಹುದು?
ಅವರು: ನನಗೇನೋ ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ ಈ ಟೆಕ್ನಾಲಜಿ ಬಳಸಲು ನಾನು ಇಂಜಿನಿಯರಿಂಗ್ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದಿದ್ದು ನಿಜ. ಕಲೆ ಬಹುಶ ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಸಂತಸ ನೀಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಇಂಜಿನಿಯರಿಂಗ್ ವಾಸ್ತವ ಲೋಕದ ಉಪಯುಕ್ತತೆಯನ್ನು ಕಟ್ಟಿಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ.
ನಾನು: ಈ ಶಿಲ್ಪವನ್ನು ಮಾಡುವ ಮೊದಲು ಹೀಗೇ ಮಾಡಬೇಕೆಂಬ ನೀಲಿ ನಕಾಶೆ ಇಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದಿರಾ..?
ಅವರು: ಇಲ್ಲ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾ ಬದಲಾಗುತ್ತಾ ಈಗಿನ ಕೃತಿ ಆಗಿದೆ. ಬಹುಶ ಇಂಜಿನಿಯರಿಂಗ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ಇಂತಹುದೇ ವಸ್ತು ಬೇಕೆಂದು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸುತ್ತೀರಿ. ನಾವು ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನು ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸುತ್ತಾ ಯಾವುದೋ ಔಟ್ ಪುಟ್ ತರುತ್ತೇವೆ.

ಇನ್ನೂ ಒಂದು ಮಾತು ಹೇಳಬೇಕೆನ್ನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಓದು-ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಮತ್ತು ಚಿಂತನೆಗಳ ಮೂಲ ಉದ್ದೇಶ ಒಂದೇ.. ಅದು ಸತ್ಯದ ಶೋಧ. ಆ ಸತ್ಯವನ್ನು ಹಲವಾರು ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಡುಕಬಹುದು. ಇಂಜಿನಿಯರುಗಳು, ಗಣಿತಜ್ಞರು ಮತ್ತು ಕಲಾವಿದರ ಜೀವನ ಚರಿತ್ರೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇಂತಹ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗಳಿವೆ.
ಏನೂ ಓದದೆ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಮನಸ್ಸು ತರ್ಕಬದ್ದವಾಗಿ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುವುದಾದರೆ ನೀವೂ ಇಂಜಿನಿಯರ್ ಆಗಬಹುದು.

Oracle migration tips

1. Check which Unix user owns the ORACLE_HOME:

% echo $ORACLE_HOME
/u01/app/oracle/product/9.2.0

% ls -ld $ORACLE_HOME
drwxr-xr-x 58 oramigts dba 1024 Jan 2 2004 9.2.0

The ORACLE_HOME is owned by Unix user "oramigts" and Unix group "dba"

2. Check the $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/lib/config.s file

[If your platform has config.c: Due to the way different compilers under different architectures generate assembler code, it's not possible to give a universal rule.]

It shows OSDBA group as "g680" (whereas the output from step 1 shows the Unix group "dba")

3. Modifiy the config.s so that it references the correct group. Change the line:

.ascii "g680\0"

to

.ascii "dba\0"

4. Rename the config.o file:

mv config.o config.o.bak

5. Regenerate the config.o file and the 'oracle' binary

make -f ins_rdbms.mk config.o ioracle

6. Check the file config.o is created at $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/lib

ls -al $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/lib/config.o

7. Verify that you can now connect to the database as SYSDBA using SQL*Plus

8. Try to upgrade the database again using DBUA

Sir Ernest Shackleton

Ernest Shackleton was a British explorer of the Antarctic in the early 1900's. He is best remembered for his expedition from 1914-1916 in the HMS Endurance.

During this journey, his ship got stuck in the ice near the Antarctic continent. He and his 27 men then survived 19 months before they were rescued. Shackleton organized the rescue personally after he made an 800 mile open-ocean journey in a life-boat to the inhabitated island of South Georgia. He then returned on the rescue mission to the desolate Elephant Island where he had left the majority of his crew under the care of his Executive Officer.
